
Level Design Contributions: First & Final Regions
In my role as a level designer, I had the privilege of contributing extensively to the design and development of the game’s first and final regions. My work centered around creating engaging, innovative levels that not only aligned with the overall vision of the game but also harmonized with its mechanics and systems. I ensured that each level delivered unique challenges while maintaining a memorable experience for players.
For both regions, I designed and developed detailed level blockouts using Unreal Engine 5, with a primary focus on layout, mechanics, and the visual direction of each space. I worked closely with game designers, artists, and programmers to ensure seamless integration of the levels into the broader game. Through this collaborative approach, I ensured that the levels supported the game’s systems and narrative while delivering a compelling gameplay experience.
The first region presented the challenge of introducing players to the world, establishing the tone, and teaching core mechanics. I carefully structured the level flow, balancing exploration with tutorial elements and ensuring smooth player progression. In the final region, I focused on crafting a satisfying and climactic conclusion, with a focus on pacing, difficulty, and the emotional stakes of the narrative. This area required me to fine-tune enemy placement, resource distribution, and environmental hazards, ensuring the level remained challenging yet fair for players of all skill levels.
Throughout the development process, I conducted extensive playtests, gathering feedback on gameplay flow, challenge balance, and overall player engagement. I used this feedback to iterate on designs, continuously refining and enhancing the player experience. Each region was optimized for both performance and playability, utilizing Unreal Engine 5’s capabilities for performance profiling, asset optimization, and testing across a range of hardware configurations.
To ensure consistency and clear communication across teams, I maintained detailed design documentation, including level maps, design notes, and iteration logs. This documentation served as a critical tool for keeping everyone aligned with the vision and allowed for efficient execution throughout the development process.
Although I’m unable to share screenshots of my work, I can confidently say that the regions I worked on were designed to provide a dynamic and immersive experience, with thoughtful attention to pacing, narrative integration, and gameplay innovation. Through close collaboration, iteration, and a deep understanding of both design and technical constraints, I contributed to the creation of levels that were both engaging and integral to the game's world-building and storytelling.
Intro and Final Regions
As a level designer, I played a crucial role in shaping both the first and final regions of the game, ensuring a cohesive and immersive experience for players from start to finish. For the game’s opening region, I focused on establishing the tone, flow, and player guidance, carefully introducing key mechanics and setting up the visual and thematic elements of the world. My aim was to create a strong foundation that would engage players right from the start.
In the final region, I contributed to the initial design, laying out a compelling and climactic experience that would serve as the game's intense conclusion. I focused on pacing, level complexity, and ensuring that the region aligned with the narrative and gameplay progression. Though I was responsible for the initial design, the level evolved through collaboration with the team to bring it to its final form.
By maintaining constant communication with cross-functional teams, I helped ensure that both regions not only met but exceeded design expectations, resulting in a seamless and engaging gameplay experience that resonated with players.
